Omakase Box is Ending

After 10 months, we’re sad that the March Omakase Box will be our last. While we had some die hard fans, we learned that primetime wasn’t ready for the service. We have been developing a new service that carries some of the spirit of Omakase Box. We’re sorry that the Omakase Box is ending at a time when you’ve been supporting fans and members.

Anyone with outstanding months left on their membership, we will be issuing credits starting next week via email (paypal).

Fruit-Flavoured Egg Ball Cookies

How were everyone’s holidays? I hope you all got a chance to unwind and enjoy some good food, I certainly did! Even though you probably all had your fill of sweets and goodies, another one won’t hurt.

This is something I ate when I was younger. They used to only come in singular clear packs with cute animal cartoons on the front. Nowadays, many companies make them and they also come in more than the one original egg flavour. I never tried any of them, until I picked up Sanlea’s Fruit Cocktail Egg Ball Cookies.

If you have a few, they are harmless because they really are just airy balls of potato starch and eggs. But if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself having a hard time stopping yourself (and believe me, you will).

The “fruit” is very faint but it isn’t very different from the original, which means it’s just as addicting! They are cheap, yummy and easily edible. The best way to enjoy them is to pop them into your mouth, let it sit on your tongue and it’ll eventually melt. It’s one of those snacks that you love eating because it’s fun, even if it is just potato starch.

A Walking Tour with Sweet Treats – Tasty Tours Toronto

tasty-tours-toronto-3

If you like sweet treats (sure you do, you savvy ninja!), you’ll love going on a sweets tasting tour. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure to embark on a sweets adventure with Audrey from Tasty Tours. For ninjas unfamiliar with culinary tours, it’s quiet simple: you discover the interesting facets of a neighborhood through a walking-food tour, tasting the various treats from specialty shops, all while learning a little bit about the shop owners and the sweets they make.

At Tasty Tours Toronto, Audrey does an amazing job showing you around quirky Kensington Market and the tasty spots that only a local will know. Not to mention all the things I’ve learned about sweets, the free samplings, store discounts, and quizzes! I loved answering her pop quizzes, because I almost always get them right! The tour lasted about 2 hours, and with Audrey with your guide, it’ll be fun, friendly, and super-organized.

So if you’re looking for something unique to do in Toronto with friends, family, or even to throw a unique event, drop Audrey a line. Just be sure to come hungry, or a plastic bag to save the treats for later! And for being an amazing ninja, you can get a $10 OFF by following the link below. Don’t forget to subscribe to their newsletter for the latest sweets news around town and exclusive give aways!

Let the good time roll with Viva la rolls tortilla chips!

[Ninja treat scouts search high and low, jay-walk, slide through subway doors, and examine every aisle, to find the tastiest, weirdest, and coolest bites. Here are their chronicles; @yzhalia's passage as a ninja treats scout]

I love tortilla chips, but more as a “food vessel” than by its own. They are so versatile: you can pile high toppings to make nachos, dip them in a variety of sauces & dips or crumble them in a thick spicy soup. But alone, they seem quite bland to me or just salty, depending on the brand.

On a bright yet brisk day of autumn, as I was wandering in Ottawa’s Byward market in the hope of making some new tasty discoveries, Don Fernando’s Viva la rolls caught my attention.  It must have been the red packaging sporting the word “hot” since anything with a spicy kick tends to pique my interest!

Once home, I could not resist sampling them. Before opening the bag, I checked the provenance of the product (I’m an archivist, so the place of origin is always important!) and had a surprise:  despite the Latino look of the package, these tortilla chips are made in Austria – which makes sense since I bought them at Continental Delicatessen, a Polish-European style delicatessen (57 York St., Ottawa)

I quite like the look of the chips: they are rolled into a tight cylinder as if trying to say that no dip or topping is required. And they totally stand on their own! The chips are crispy as a chip should be, with a pleasant spice blend – reminiscent of salsa – and a slightly zesty zing at the end. I usually go for burn-in-the-mouth-for-hours-spicy chips and while the Viva la rolls do not qualify in this category, I enjoyed the mild spiciness that just tingled on my tongue.

So if you are looking for some heat, those tortillas chips are not for you. But if you are looking for a snack full of flavor, then you are in for a treat! And like any type of tortilla chips, Viva la rolls’ are at their best when paired with some beer, lively music and a few friends.

Strawberry Popped Corn – Kuai Kuai Strawberry Corn Cookies (A direct translation)

Strawberry-Popped-Corn-Kuai-Kuai-Strawberry-Corn-Cookies

What makes Cheetos so good? Is it the cheesy goodness or the airy chip that melts in your mouth? At one point, I thought the two couldn’t live without one another, but that was before I discovered that there are companies out there that do the exact same thing but with different flavours.

If you think about it, onion ring chips have the same concept. There’s also Regent’s Golden Sweet Corn but the two of them both have a salty taste (despite having the word “sweet” in it’s name).

While I was at T & T (one of my favourite places), I walked down the snack aisle like I always do but something caught my eye. This package of strawberry popped corn!

Imported from Taiwan, this sweet moon-shaped snack is something I’ve never tasted before. It’s sweet but has a light creamy outer exterior that’s barely visible.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking to try something different but want that familiar feeling; it’s puff-tastic!

SNAP Infusion Supercandy – Mel Caramel

SNAP-Supercandy-Mel-Caramel

Gear Up! These vitamin infused candies are not the Flintstones chews that we grew up with.  Last month we randomly selected a few members to taste test two of Snap’s most popular flavours, and cara-Mel ones came out on top.  While these are currently not available in Canada yet, your thoughts on them will help Snap decide if Supercandy will be coming to a store near you.

Ramune Soft Drink Candies

ramune-candy

Inspired by the Japanese drink sealed with a marble, Ramune’s distinctive ‘alien face’ bottles are a novelty in itself. This is a favourite candy of Obox member Derrick’s little ones. Available at J-Town, T&T, and Asian candy shops.
